How to Reset a Fire TV to Factory Settings

Has your Fire TV or Stick been acting kind of weird? Glitchy? Slow? Is there an app that just hangs for a really long time and you’re not really sure what its deal is?

If it’s an issue with a specific app and not more of a whole system problem, uninstalling and reinstalling the troublemaker app is probably a good first step to take before resetting everything. If you’ve already tried that and you’re still having problems then it’s probably reset time.

If your Fire TV or Stick isn’t finding your wifi network, or isn’t connecting to your Amazon account, then you might wanna just skip straight to reset time. There isn’t really a wifi app you can uninstall and reinstall to fix the problem. At least not one that I know about. That’s more of a system problem.

The down side of doing this is that you will be resetting your Fire TV or Stick to factory settings. It’ll basically be like a brand new device. Settings will need to be reset and apps will need to be reinstalled.

This might be obvious to you, but it’s probably a good idea to take steps to ensure that nothing gets accidentally unplugged while doing this. Now might be the right moment to tell your friend who loves unplugging stuff not this time, Gerald, no!

Go to Settings (near the top of the screen) --> Device --> Reset to factory defaults... Confirm reset. Now the fun begins. I mean, now the waiting begins. Same thing, right? You should see various messages about resetting, optimizing apps, blah, blah, blah, etc. This will take a little while.

Once the system comes back up, you might be asked to reunite the TV with its long lost friend, the remote. Make sure the remote is close to the TV when you do this. Also, I think the home button might sometimes need to be held for longer than 10 seconds.

Finally, connect to your network. Once you’re connected the Fire TV will take a moment to check for updates. A little more waiting and you should be good to go! Congratulations on your new used Fire TV!
